2. The game 'Slowly, slowly'.

T. covers a flashcard with a picture of i.e. fish, with white one of the same size and then uncovers it 'slowly'. If someone guesses – shouts and T. asks the rest of the children whether it is the right or the wrong answer. If it is correct, T. shows the flashcard and the whole class repeat the name again. If not – uncovers the picture a little bit more.

Ss replace T. in the game.

All the words are known from a previous lesson.

3. Pre – listening

T. asks ss to use magnets and place the flashcards which are similar - close to each other on the whiteboard. Ss may have different ideas how to do it. T. should take time to allow re-arrange the groups a couple of times (i.g. milk, yoghurt, bread - “white” category)

4. While – listening

T. asks ss to listen to the presentation and answer the question: what colours have you noticed? (listening for gist):

Ss say the following colours: orange, green, red, blue, purple and yellow.
T. asks to listen for the second time, check the answers (listening for checking).

T. asks to listen once more to find out what the names of the six groups are.

Ss answer:

  • grains
  • vegetable
  • fruits
  • milk products
  • meat and beans
  • oils or fats

T. makes sure that children understand the meaning of the names of these groups.

5. Post – listening activities

T. divides the whole class into six groups and gives each one different coloured piece of A4 paper - orange, green, red, blue, purple and yellow.

Ss's task is to discuss what products belong to the specific colour and arrange again flashcards on the whiteboard again.

T. shows a picture of the Food Pyramid and ss check their guesses. If they were wrong they correct it.

T. asks students to guess why the picture is called “Food Pyramid”? (It is in the shape of a pyramid, to help people remember what food to eat. )

T. explains that the steps remind us to stay physically active. It means we should exercise, run, swim or walk etc.

6. Guessing game “Silent”.

T. removes all the flashcards from the whiteboard and leaves only six pieces of colourful papers. T. shows any of flashcards and place below any colour (for example: bread below orange). If this is correct and bread belongs to Orange group, the kids repeat 'bread - orange' and clap. In case of incorrect answer – for example meat below Red group – ss remain “silent”.

Ss replace the T. in the game. They use all the flashcards so finally there are six groups arranged on the whiteboard again.
